This may be a stupid question, but I hope someone can help.
How do I know if I have USB 2.0 or 1.1?
I'm running Windows XP & my PC is about 1 year old. I tried looking under
....Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager / and then right clicking on the USB controller icons...but I still don't see anything that helps me.
I want to get an external HD so I can store my lossless music, but want to make sure the drive is compatible.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Not sure how you can tell, but any usb 2.0 device is backwards compatable with usb 1.0 . If your computer doesn't have usb 2.0, it will just have a slower transfer speed (but it will still work). FWIW, if you computer is a year old, it probably has usb 2.0 . Hope this helps.

I wondered the same for my PC. I Googled and found an article in one of the PC mag type websites saying to look exactly where you looked: if the description includes the word "enhanced", you have 2.0; if not, you have 1.1. I have 1.1, but my machine's at least 4-5 yrs old.

I looked at mine and it does say enhanced 2.0 in the device manager. If yours doesn't say, you might google your usb chipset (in my case the "intel 82801db usb") and you might find out the speed of the usb that way.

It says "VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller" so I guess it's probably 2.0.
Thanks guys :)
