after reading all the faqs and talking with people I guess I really can't decided on whether to spend the money on the mics or on the preamp
really would just appreciate any opinions
is it dumb to buy 1,000 dollar mics and the spend less than that on the preamp > recorde........... I have about 2,000 grand to spend on the rig.....would I be better off to spend the money on higher dollar pre like the v2, v3 or other combo
so basically knowing all you guys know if you were just starting out would you sink a bunch of money into mics ..... or get a quality pre - recorder combo and get less expensive mics
was thinking of mk4 > nbox > jb3 or neumann or mg > Mod UA5 > jb3's but haven't seen any of these lineages around so I am thinking it might not be a good idea to have expensive mics if I don't have the nessary components....
I am soooo confused...anyone paying attention to the yard sale lately can see that... haha

either of those would sound great IMO, you will see the biggest change when you upgrade mics in my opinion.
no purchase is stupid, I think of them as investments.

Get a PMD-671 with an oade mod. Patch for a while. Then pull the trigger for mics.

most of the places I run video at ....there is no one to patch off .....either there aren't any other tapers or we are the only ones allowed to be running equipment

The BCM mod 671 goes for $975 I think. You would still have enough extra to buy some KM184's, MBHO's, AKG 481's, etc.
One rig that I've seen lots of people run is the: MBHO 603/KA200 > MP-2 > SBM-1 > JB3
I think you could probably score that for $1600 or thereabouts. You could also go MP-2 > R-1, like I do... which with a set of good mics for around $850, you'd be looking at $1600 also for the total.
I'm loving the MP-2 > R-1 setup... it's so easy to use, compact, and the internal ADC in the R-1 is great. No need for another $400 box in your lineage.
This would also follow the unofficial rule of spending in a 2:1 ratio for mics:pre..... get some $800ish mics, and a $400ish pre, like the MP-2 or a mod UA-5.
Good luck with your choice.

so I could run the BMC mod 671 without anything else km184 > bcm mod 671 ...that would leave me a couple hundred for flash cards or microfrive whatever is better .....the only problem with the r1 is having tot up for 44.1 to 48k for the dvds in final cut......

Dude, I would say spend as much as you possibly can on mics and upgrade everything else later. However on the other hand, if you can find a relatively cheap V3 in the YS then you would be set on a pre/adc for life pretty much. Then it's just a matter of trying out different mics in the future to firgure out what you really like.
$1100 on a V3
$125 on a jb3
<$800 on mics

save up a few more hundred, get some MGs and the pmd671.
