i am looking for a quick reference that explains the difference in caps for microphones. example: what is the difference between hypers and omnis? what caps should you use for different venue types? etc. if i have overlooked this somewhere, and can be pointed in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. any help?
thanks in advance.

I didn't know either so just now I went to The Archive (http://taperssection.com/index.php?board=14.0) and then to the archive subforum for microphones and setup (http://taperssection.com/index.php?board=50.0). In there I browsed the threads and found this thread (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=6160.0) and it linked to this page (http://www.minidisc.org/mic_setups.html)
Hope that helps. Also, make sure you take a quick gander at the archived stuff first!

Just to clarify for you guys. In some microphones there are differnt caps to utilize differnt pick up patterns. The pick up pattenr is what you are actually reffering to. Take a multi pattern LD for example it may have 5 or more differnt patterns but only one capsule. SDs often have removable capsules for the differnt pick up patterns.
As far as what to use and when, just give yourself sometime and it will all come to you. Generally cardoid will be the universal pick up pattern. Omnis you really only want to use outside, hypers you want to use in a very noisy room or in a situation where you are far away. And the list goes on. Once you read up on the differnt pick up patterns and understand the directionality of each then it will make a lot more sense.

I imagine that if you can get real close, in a room that sounds good, with a quiet audience, omnis would sound spectacular indoors. I'll have to try it one of these days. Jdisk all the way right?

split omni's on-stage also can produce wonderful results. for those of us who don't have a J-disk lying around and don't use omni's often enough to warrant getting one.

getting a j-disc? apparently you missed all the DIY j-disc heat. you can make one in 5 minutes if you really wanted to, just figure out some way to mount it to your stand and you're ready to go. mine is made of nothing more than foam, weather stripping and a dowl - mounted with super clamps, works great. ;)

im a lazy-ass and had someone make me a j-disc, razorback to be exact ;D
I was working LOTS of hrs this summer tho, thats the ONLY reason someone made me one :)
and then i only used it once and sold my omni's :P but i didnt sell the j-disc cause i plan on using it this summer once i rebuy my omni's ;) I just wish i had quiet audiences to use the omnis on, rather than just throwing the j-disc up in the summer months
anyway................
