Title: Soundfield ST350
Post by: Charlies on January 11, 2006, 02:53:48 PM
ST350 PORTABLE MICROPHONE SYSTEM.

Anybody have one of these? I can't tell how big it is in relation to the 250. Looks pretty interesting when combined with the surround-sound software. (Searched for 350 on here and didn't get any hits, so apologies if this has already been vetted.)

It's a pretty neat system. I have not seen it in person, but I did consider getting one since Zaxcom just released their built-in Soundfield decoder for the Deva. However, after some conversations with engineers using Soundfields, the recommendation was not to get one. The biggest issue seems to be getting consistent results from the soundfield mics. One time you'll get stellar results, the next mediocre results when the setup is identical. For me to justify $6K for a mic, I want consistent results (and more paying audio jobs!)...

Thanks Wayne...seems odd that results would vary when conditions are identical...must be something to do with how the surround effect is produced?

All I know is that Ron Keyser does nice with with his ams st250. This has had me admiring that rig for years.

I only made one bunk recording w/my ST-250, and that due to humidity.
otherwise, consistantly kick ass.

and...
the st-350 is supposed to be impervious to outside weather conditions. Plus, its lighter than the 250.
still, not worth $6k.  fuk dat!
