Title: Minidisc Recorder question
Post by: bconnolly on January 13, 2006, 03:32:14 PM
My buddy has a Net MD and wants to know exactly what the input on his device is.  It says optical but it looks like a 1/8" mini plug for headphones.

Is that something that would take a plug like this one? :

I'd answer him myselft but I really don't know... is it really optical or is it something else?

EDIT: sorry the picture is so huge... it's all I've got.

It's an 1/8" jack but it can take a line ignal or an optical signal.  You would use an 1/8" adapter with a regular toslink cable if going optical in, or just buy a toslink>mini cable from sound professionals.

Just like the JB3  ;)

Nice... maybe I'll convince him to give/sell it to me for those super-duper stealth situations.

It seems to me like the MT2496 would be better in a super stealth situation than the minidisc player.

Keep in mind you will need some sort of A/D convertor between your mics/preamp and the MD.

In "stealthy" situations I just run my Core Sounds directly into my JB3. You'd do the same with the MD, but you wouldn't need a battery box.

What kind of mics do you have?

And my $.02 is that I'd still prefer the MD over the MicroTrack due to the MT's poor performance going mic in. The only downer is the 80 minute disc change.

Have fun taping!

Except you'd want to get a HiMD that records 16/44 wave files.

if you get a hi-md recorder and use a 1gb minidisc, you can go 7 hours of recording without changing discs, very handy when recording shows.

That's if you record in a lossy format (ie. mp3, atrac).
