Title: 722/744 & 4GB Files...
Post by: sickrick43 on January 14, 2006, 10:36:39 AM

Maiden voyage of my 744 last nite.  Kimock band.  LOVE this deck, GOD do I love this deck.  Performed admirably, real easy to use.  Ran it out of the V3 @ 96/24.  Pull sounds amazing.

Only problem is, I set it up for 4GB files and when I try to transfer the files via firewire to my PC is get a "File or Directory Is Corrupt or Unreadable" error in Windows.  I know the file is good, because I can listen to it the whole way thru.

Any clues why this is happening and how I can get these 4GB files to transfer?  (or do I have to try and go to a buddy with a Mac and try it there?).

HELP!

Rick

Knew you'd love it.

Are you using XP?  I'm surprised it would be a problem in XP but I do all my xfers under Linux.

You might have issues trying to open the files w/ certain apps but should have no issues transfereing the files.  I had similar issues w/ my VIA chipset based firewire card.  Is the unit directly into your PC/MAC? ie no firewire hubs etc..  I'd try on a different computer if you have one available.

Try a different FW port on your machine. Also try going directly in if you're daisy chaining. If you have a PCI FW expansion card, try that. Getting the 722 to work on my Windows box was a PITA when I first got it. The FW drivers have been made more robust since then, but obviously they can't test every possible system.

I'd also recommend keeping the split at 2 GB unless you know the app you're going into won't have any problems with the larger files. Welcome and check out the team board to find more tips and tricks for running it.

Were you running analog out of the V3? Just curious. You should try it!  ;D

You might also try updating to the newest firmware. I know there was a bug that addressed corrupt files and firewire when disconnected improperly and the recovery was run? I ran into this myself. v.1.60 firmware fixes it. The new firmware will also only allow max 2 gig splits I think too.

Congrats on the new toy!

Rick, what have you found out about this problem?

I learned to find a place to stop & restart my 744 to avoid the 4.0gb file size limitation. No problem with the file size in my application. I use Samplitude 7.2, which creates a file to handle the overrun, so that's no problem, but the joining of a file that was split by the 744 is worth avoiding whenever possible.

why is that?  I have taped a ton of shows with the 722 and outside of an early firmware issue, the split acts perfectly

I love the split, though I have mine at 2GB. It's wonderful to open a new w64 in Spark and paste in 2 or three split files from the 722, making the entire show continuous.
