Title: Need help with DVD burner...
Post by: Swampy on January 17, 2006, 10:13:35 PM
Uggg, you think after owning my own computer for the past 5-6 years, I would have learned somthing about it by now ::) haha. So anyway, I use DVDs to store all of my master flacs and such and occationally will download a dvd of a concert and have not had any problems getting the drive to work properly in a good while. So today, I put in a blank to burn some masters off and I get an error in Nero "The drive is not initalizing! - perhaps due to a defective disc" so I tried a few more DVDs, no dice. (I've burned stuff on a bunch of DVDs out of the same spinde, so I don't think its the DVDs) Does anyone know what this error means and how to remedy it? I would reinstall the burner firmware and drivers, but I have no idea what brand it is (I bought it awhile ago) and it only comes up in the Device Manager as GENERIC DVD DUAL 4xMAX.

Can anyone help me? I only have a 40 gig HD, so its gonna start to get plugged up REAL fast :(

Check to see if you have it on "Image Recorder".  You want your dvd burner, no the image recorder.

This will sound really easy or really stupid depending on how you look at it but turn your computer off and unplug it.  Either pull the power cord out of the power supply or pull the cord from the wall.  Wait a few minutes and restart.  On one of my Sony burners I would get that message and by taking all the current out of my computer it seemed to reset itself.  Alot of the time a computer will keep electrical current inside of itself and sometimes will screw things up.

What version of Nero are you using?

I know it normally only applies when copying (where Nero builds a temp image); but are you tight on HD space?

going along with this, sometimes i have to unhook the cable from my nec burner.  its like the drive will just stop working, so i have to shut down, pull apart my case, unhook the power cable and ide cable from the burner, restart, and then it works just fine.

i seriously have to do this every couple of months.  i don't know why and its a pain, but it seems to do the trick.
