NAMM06: New Sony flash recorder
High end portable kit to drool for 21-Jan-06
This year at Winter NAMM 2006 we had our first sight of Sony’s new flash RAM based compact recorder – the Sony PCM-D1. It is targeted at high end applications and priced to match ($1999). The system has 4Gb of internal RAM and accepts Memory Stick PRO (High Speed) for expandability.
It records at up to 96kHz at 24 bit and has a high quality X-Y configuration pair of electret condenser microphones. It does have a broad range of other sampling frequencies and bit rates to make the RAM go further. The PCM-D1 takes 4 AA batteries (as always NiMH recommended for maximum life) that offer up to 5 hrs of recording time.
The PCM-1D offers a USB connection to allow easy connection to PCs and Macs. The Sony PCM-D1 has a solid Titanium case (1mm thick) to give the unit a long life in harsh conditions (although it looks so cute you’ll be careful taking it out of the studio).
It has a high quality in built limiter to cope with those unexpected level fluctuations. It is expected to be shipping soon – expect further details on the Sony website in the near future.

I'm sure this model has been discussed before...it looks just as ugly.

Step away from the tricorder, Mr. Spock!

I swear every time I see that thing, it pisses me off. Sony could have had something really cool.
Instead they have the ultimate 7-pin dongle.

The thing does kind of have a Fisher Price look too it.
Rumor has it the beta name for it was "My First Flash Recorder"

did they just dig this design out of the sony vault and insert a flash recorder? this thing manages to look old and like a toy all at the same time. does it have any other tricks?

Cheaper, great retro Sony looks, waterproof, 30 or 60GB capacity, recording capability any day now:

I am just so dissapointed with sony and how they cannot make a good Flash recorder. at least make something as good as the M1 or D100. this thing looks ugly and those Meters are ridiculous. it looks like something from the 60's. plus who wants to use the mics on the flash recorder?!? they probably suck. sorry for the rant.
