Title: Please help decide - new rig
Post by: Music is alive on January 29, 2006, 06:32:08 PM
Hi all

Newbie taper, putting together my first true rig (only filmed before, plus borrowed rigs from friends to tape).

I've already bought a NJB3, so that's the recorder for sure.

I'm going to be recording mainly loud rock (and metal) shows, in a stealth situation; mics collar mounted similar to Humbug's pictorial from a while back.

After researching a good deal and speaking with some folks on this board, I've got my possible rigs narrowed to 3:

SPCMC8>SPSPDB6>NJB3  [cardioid]
SPCMC8>AD20>NJB3 [cardioid]
CSB>SPSPDB6>NJB3 [binaural]

Can someone critique my 3 candidate rigs and advise which of those 3 would give me the best, fullest sound coming into the NJB3, and with the least probability of sound quality issues?

With 2 I am coming line in and 1 I am coming digital in.  With one I am utilizing an AD20, with the others just a battery box with levels and bass rolloff.

The rig without bass rolloff, will that hurt me?  My understanding is that bass presence isn't a big factor with SPCMC8, is my understanding correct?

Will I definitely want the AD20 because, even with maxing out levels on the battery box/leveler/bass rolloff, the signal coming into the NJB3 won't be terribly hot?

Please critique the 3 setups and advise of some positives and negatives of each.  Please note that I have done a decent amount of homework and I've narrowed it down to these and just need to understand pros/cons of these three candidate rigs.

Any one of those would work fine.  By binaural, I'm assuming you mean omni caps instead of cards.  If in the 'sweet spot' the omni's would give you the fullest, most natural recording.  If you think you'll find yourself at a distance then the cards might be a better choice.

If you choose to use the AD20, you're going to need need to have the SP-SPSB-6(battery box) in the chain regardless as the AD20 does not provide power, only gain and A/D conversion.

If you're interested in an AD20 I've got one FS in the yard sale.
