comments....?
One concern I have is being able to go mic in with no preamp. I've been doing it w/ no problems for years w my minidisc. Now I am hearing that might not work so good w the JB3. Is the same true of the microtrack?
Another concern in battery life. I dont wanna have to worry about batteries for at least 4 hrs. How is the batt life on the microtrack?
If I can get a MT for the same price as a jb3.......is the MT the better choice?

Haven't used a JB3 but can answer the MT side:
- You can go mic in with no preamp no problem on the MT, 1/8" or TRS.
- Battery life on the MT depends on the card you use and the mics. 4-5 hours is pushing it with a CF, 3 with phantom power or a microdrive.
- I'd go with the JB3 if you're just using it as a bit bucket, the MT if you want more flexibility in a smaller form factor.
- Don't forget to factor the cost of a CF card into the price of the MT.
If you can get an MT for the same price as a JB3 you're either getting ripped off on the price of the JB3 or the MT is hot. :D

another differences between the jb3 and MT
JB3 is limited to 16 bit, MT is 24
i don't think you can get a MT for anywhere near the cost of a jb3 though, even if you can find a MT for the same basic cost of a jb3 you need to add a CF card

How bout going straight in to JB3 with mics?? I run Core Sound Cardioids. They have a small batt box powered by a 9v batt. I have gone mic in to my minidisc for years with these mics w no problem......

If you have a battery box than it will be no problem for you to run Coresounds > Batt Box > JB3

If you have a battery box than it will be no problem for you to run Coresounds > Batt Box > JB3
If you do this and select the Line in rather than the Mic In, you will get noticably better sound.
In other words - Coresounds > Batt Box >(line-in)JB3.
