Is there such a thing as a portable, standalone, reasonably inexpensive (< $500), DC-powered word clock? I've Googled without much success, but perhaps I'm using the wrong keywords or some such.
Reason I ask: I'm evaluating options for multi-channel (well, really dual stereo) recording, and leaning heavily towards an R-4. But I wonder whether I could run 2 x V3 as long as I'm able to sync them to the same word clock, thereby enabling easy mixing in post.

Just looking at the pictures - the V3 has a clock out but no in?...so you could sync a second AD to it...

Ahhhh, shit - I thought the V3 had a WC *IN* (mine's been replaced with an optical output). Duh, should've checked the Grace website first rather than relying on my memory. So...this idea's a no-go. Thanks!

If the chip in question has a clock input, perhaps it wouldn't be too difficult to swap the WC out for an in. If Grace has done opti-mods (supposedly at consumer's suggestion), then it wouldn't hurt to call them and ask about getting a custom V3.

The R4 only has stereo digital in anyway.

Good to know. And sorry, I wasn't clear - if I go the 2 x V3 route (doubtful), I wouldn't use the R4 at all - I'd stick with my 2 x 24-bit external recorders.

I'll have to try this sometime...I have two A/Ds with word Clock I/Os and two JB3s - I matrix one band on the fly - stage + board... - but maybe I should run a set of room mics and add them in post...
I usually have this shit with me - there probably should be some sort of penalty for toting gear to a gig - and not using it... ;)

I've thought about this a few times. But a poor-man's solution, something like trying to get two UA5's and clock them together. It would certainly require hacking though. Like wiring the clocks together. I don't expect it to work really just a crazy thought.
