Title: Ran 17' split omni's at the state theater last night!
Post by: C.Clark on February 05, 2006, 03:58:14 PM
Subjects says it all and wow, i was telling Joe, cant remember his name on here, but we decided to try some new stuff out last night for exit clov and brothers past at the state theater last night.  we both split at the soundboard rail, came out to be about 17' split, about 8' up.  I must say, I ran the omni's split for exit clov, my first time out wth the new TL's and 722.  The soundstage is just huge, i can believe how good it actually sounds.  I always wanted to run omni's indoors and i must say i think i will try this out again when there arent too many people in a decent venue.  One of the best tapes ive gotten at the state.  I just wanted to maybe start a discussion on what others thought about running omni's indoors and their results.

It was a great night for experimentation with the new rig, and i had a great time now that im actually out taping shows again

Edit: lineage for exit clov and bp for reference

Exit Clov: ADK TL(omni, split 17') -> mp-2(80hz HPF) -> 722(24/48)

Brothers Past: ADK TL(card, split 17') -> mp-2(80hz HPF) -> 722(24/48)

I'm actually more interested in hearing the Brothers Past 17' split cards....wow.

Is there not a serious "hole in the middle" effect? Definitely be different sounding.

Im listening to it right now, it sounds great, not as open and natural sounding as the split omni's, which after listening to that whole exit clov set, im amazed at how it sounded.  The BP sounds really good, very natural sounding, nodistinct hole in the middle as i can tell so far, it needs to be normailized a bit, as it my first night running hte 722 and im still getting used to the meters, but i think it sounds great, as soon as i can get it tracked ill BT it.

-I just thought about the stereo image a little bit too, closed my eyes for a few minutes and it sounds so good, no hole in the middle and they had a great stereo mix going, so IMO it sounds great.

EDIT:  also note, joe and i ran off the same stands, he ran subcards for exit clov and hypers for BP

Chris, why the mp2?

Chris, why the mp2?

i was going to run my Audio Technica 4051's for the opener, and Joe helped change my mind.  and after hearing the opener, they didnt have a very lound bass mix going, so i just decided to stick with the warmth and see how it sounded, next show will be without the mp2 and ill see what i like better, for now, for brighter PA's ill be running the mp2 and with regular more bass heavy PA's, ie. 9:30 club, no mp2.  I love having the freed om of 2 different sets of mics and 2 different pre's.

Yeah buddy.  I am glad I brought the extra stand and silver cables in with me last night.  That was really excellent.  I haven't had a good chance to listen since I have been at work since 10 am.  It was really cool running split omnis, cards, subcards, and hypers all at one show between two tapers.  From the few minutes of each set I listend to in the car on the ride home, I think I like the subcards in there more than the hypers as far as running splits go, it just sounds much more natrual.  But that was on my car stereo which is crap and it was right after the show so I will see how they really sound later tonight after the Superbowl.  The great thing is that if either of us really like running the splits inside, then it's all good because the state is so easy to run the splits in because of the elevated sound board and the rail around it.  I think it's time for me to try out the omnis in there, and probably time to try and make a jdisc.  I have been loving all the stuff I can do now with the 414s.

Peace,
Joe

I've never split that wide inside, maybe 10ft tops, but in the right circumstances the results are amazing.

I usually split 6-8 ft on the balcony rail at a few small theaters I tape at.
Reminds me that I need to finally buy a 2nd ck92 so I can start doing that again.

damn moke, never would have though this would have been moved, haha.  well, i didnt have a tape measure, just quasi-measured with the foot over foot technique, could have been 15 or 16', but atleast 15, and the split omni's sound amazing, never would have thought that it could sound that good, cards sound good too, no real problem with a huge hole in the middle, i think the state is perfect for inside splits

Edit, ill make sure and take some pics next time, didnt bring my camera to this show

Not on the home system.  I have listend on my headphones just now during overtime.  My first reaction is that the split subcards sound real good, very different.  Not sure if I like it better than the subcards NOS I ran a couple of weeks ago, will have to wait and see after giving a real good listen.  The hypers sound good too, don't think I love it.  A little thin sounding.  The room sounded like poop all night though so I am gonna have to take that into consideration too.  I wanna do the omnis now.

I ran TL split omnis at the State Theater for Tea Leaf Green on 6/7/05 and loved the results.  I'm headed back there again in March and am hoping to do it again.. although, for fun I ran split cards for TLG this past NYE at the Independent in San Fran and came away with some of the better tapes I have ever made.. no hole in the middle of the sound at all.  I would be tempted to do the split card again over the omni.

I ran 15' split omni's for the better part of an outdoor festi last year and I really liked the results.  The soundstage was very wide but I actually like that.  Indoors I would be more inclined to stick at less than 10', and have done 8-10' indoor af few times.  If the room isn't too noisy, and you aren't backing up to a wall or other source of standing waves, it is very nice IMHO.  Never tried split cards though.  I'm sure I will eventually do it by forgetting to change caps... the other night I did omni's x/y on stage!  Surprisingly enough there is a little bit of image!

I will run a split with you for TLG at the State.  I will definatley be there, and will remember to bring both stands.

the splits are really growing onme, but i do realize it must be done in the right situation, whether it be cards, subs or omni's, and im just lucky that i have a venue in my own backyard that it works really well in

comin in late on this but thought i'd note that this stuff reads great.
Been to the State dozens of times and often thought about the best way to tape it (never done so as i have no mics and didn't have my patching rig on before i moved out of Falls Church.)
Shame you didn't get pics because I'm struggling to picture where you placed the mics.

I might make it to the State for the duo on 3/2, possibly with mics in hand (unless bid is accepted on a house,) but certainly with laptop.

Hope to meet you then.

We ran it them on either side of the sound board.  Ya know how the SBD is elevated a little from the dining area?  And how there are railings around the SDB area?  Well we placed them all the way up front in line with the front of the SBD in the corners of the railing.

Great. So you weren't neath the balcony (if i remember correctly.) i've seen too many people setup mics behind the board under there and shuddered...

No a good six or 7 feet infront of the balcony.  I have gotten some good results under the balcony, behind the SBD.  The key is to run them low so your not too close to the ceiling.  Get em right up close to the ceiling and it's muddy as hell.
