So far I've just been running the 722 solo and going to be trying V3>722 soon. Analog out of V3 to line in on 722, right? So both input switches should be in center position? Then the gain range becomes a non issue, source input is on auto select and I'll still have use of the gain controls on 722 for trim?
I know I should try this at home first, but I'm lazy :).

Thanks moke. Thats what I thought. Running the V3 digi in to 722 would also be an option, but then thats an awfully expensive hard disc recorder. At least this way the 722 doing something more than just being a storage device.

Make sure your mic/line switches are on line. I'd also manually select the input instead of auto-select. V3 pre >722 ADC sounds better than straight V3 (recorded with 722), IMO.

I'm looking to run my UA5 in front of fozzy's 722 this weekend. I just want to use the 722 to record (24/96). Same thing right?

you would set it to receive a digi signal then and use a bnc to rca adapter to be able to feed it a coax spdif signal

These are good questions that could use further discussion.
From the V3 manual:
When using the analog outputs and sending the signal to a recorder with a variable input, use
the following procedure: turn the gain control fully counter-clockwise, turn the trim control fully
counter-clockwise. Set the record level control on the recorder to 12 o'clock or midway between
minimum and maximum. With the sound source present, adjust the preamplifier gain control
clockwise until the signal peaks at 9dBFS (+16dBu) on the V3. Adjust the record level control
on the recorder for the optimum recording level.
V3 meters:
dBFS ANALOG OUT ANALOG OUT LED COLOR
BALANCED (dBu) UNBALANCED (dBu)
0 +25 +19 RED
-3 +22 +16 AMBER
-6 +19 +13 AMBER
-9 +16 +10 AMBER
-12 +13 +7 GREEN
-15 +10 +4 GREEN
-21 +4 -2 GREEN
-27 -2 -8 GREEN
So the v3 manual suggests peaking the V3 at -9. That results in a balanced output level of +16dBu. The 722 can accept a +26dBu signal in line mode. So if you peak the V3 at only -9, you're probably going to need to add gain at the 722 in order to make your levels.
I have been running the V3 much hotter in these situations. Same for the DAV/BG1.
I just hung up the phone with Justin and he indicated that unity is at 0. At that setting, he says the 722 will neither add gain nor attenuate prior to sending to the A/D.
So it seems to me that the pre should be run hotter than -9 dBFS unless you want to add more gain with the 722. Thoughts?

So to clarify (since I'm not very smert), run the V3 normal? I.E. if I peak the V3 meters at -3 dB, I'm effectively sending the 722 a +22 dB line signal. The 722 can accept a +26 dB line signal, so this would be running the 722 at unity, or 0, correct?

in practical usage, (not by the listed numbers), you'll be attenuating the 722 to capture that signal.
So, to run the 722 at 0 gain, the V3 would be running at -9 db? Or does it need to run hotter in your experience, Moke?

this has been my experience and yielded the best results IMO

Excellent. Thanks for the info. I was a little confused as to whether or not the -9 dB on the V3 meant unity for the 722 after reading through the previous posts.
