Title: UA-5 Phantom power
Post by: phishin024 on February 13, 2006, 09:50:49 AM
Can the phantom power on a UA-5 be switched off/on? Just purchased a UA-5 off ebay and I already own an AT822 stereo mic that is battery powered. If I plug the AT822 in to the UA-5 with phantom power I risk damaging the mic. I will buy new mics soon, but for now I want to use the AT822 for matrix recordings with my JB3 or laptop. Thanks for your input!

yes, there is a lighted button on the front of the unit.  the default is off.  if you turn it on, it lights up.

On my UA-5, it takes a firm push of the phantom buttom for the light to come on, and you sometimes have to wait a few seconds after turning the unit on. Does this happen on others' units too?

Ok, that's good to know. I always thought it was a quirky thing with my unit.

happens on mine as well... i just assume it was part of the powering up cycle of the unit.  just like you need wait a couple of seconds to be able to turn off the monitor button...

Another good thing for you is that the default power on for the A-5 is phantom power off.

Yeah, eventually it comes on with a few sudden bursts of my peak light right above it.  I hope that doesn't hurt my mics or anything.  AFAIK all UA-5's do this...
