Quote
you can record, but it isnt bit accurate
when the hard disk spins up to write (every 45 seconds or so) there is a light click, audible in areas with white noise or dead air
shows sound good but not an A recording in my book

eh, I think I answered my own question. the pops and clicks are a result of the optical-in.

I noticed, however, in the other 8 page iRiver thread that people mentioned this device having a "spdif-in". I don't see that anywhere on the unit... was the meant to say optical-in? see quote below. spdif is with a coax/rca style cable generally.

the only difference bewtween the 1xx and the 3xx is the spif/d in and out on the 1xx and collor display on the 3xx.
rockbox is also now bussy porting to the toshiba gigabeat and the iaudiio x5.

S/PDIF may be transmitted over coax or optical (and probably other transmission mechanisms).

here's what the input looks like. seems like purely optical to me... maybe 1/8" too?

Definitely 1/8"

I imagine the pops and clicks going optical in will be corrected with rockbox once its written to support it.  I taped going line in and it sounded fine to me.

Yes, the IRiver issues are only in the IRiver programming.  If you use Rockbox to record, no issues.  Drawback is that Rockbox does not support SPDIF (optical) in on the IRiver yet.

I don't think anyone is either.  It seems the main folks over there are busy with the newer projects, iPod, and don't have as much time for the iRiver specific stuff.
