Title: MT2496 uses same CPU as Ipod

FWIW:

The MT ist built upon a PortalPlayer PP5020 Processor.
It is the same as in Iriver H10, Fourth Generation iPods, iPod Mini, color iPod, U2 iPods and iPod Photo.

At least i think so, since there is a PortalPlayer logo on the shipping box and the flash images/firmwares are called PP5020.ari.

There are currently two openSource projects which where succesful in booting a Linux on PP5020 based MP3 players:

Interesting!!

So similar protection in place on the MT as on e.g. the Archos Gmini? (http://www.donat.org/archos/wiki/doku.php?id=getting_our_code_in_gmini)

I'm using the Archos myself...what protection are U talking about?

Protection against uploading alternative firmwares. See the wiki article I linked to.

Well Rockbox does have a working version for 4th,5th Gen and Nano iPods.  :P
