A friend of mine just bought a Hi-MD recorder for some field recordings he's going to be doing deep in the heart of mexio. Getting audio for a documentary film he's making. He wanted to get a mic too to go with it. I told him i'd get back to him. Any suggestions on simple, cheap mic that isn't for taping concerts, just holding in front of somone so they could talk into it? .. Nothing fancy. He doesn't need any UA-5 or anything like that. If I can't figure out anything i'll just tell him to get a set of AT831's and tape them to a stick and buy a batt box. didn't Sony sell a simple, easy to use table top mic? the ECM-909 or something like that? ... suggestions?
thanks

this is the kind of thing i would think that all in one sony machine (with the two mics on top) would be good for...
with the md, you could do a csb (core-sound binaural) setup.

thinking of telling him to get this:

Sony ECM-MS907
does it need a batt box? or is it all in the one unit. $70 isn't bad for a indie no-budget documentary film crew.

i think the csb setup is like $120...
i have no idea if that mic needs to be powered by something...

many sources on the archive.org show it just as straight into their MD:
http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Sony%20ECM-MS907%20AND%20mediatype%3Aetree%20AND%20collection%3Aetree
so I think it must have a batter in the body somewhere..

ECM-MS907
The mic is made for DAT and MD recorders, it doesn't sound bad either. It runs on 1 internal AA battery, plug it in and it's ready to go. (just make sure it's turned on) It has 2 settings 90 degrees and 120 degrees, I'm guessing the 90 would sound better for interviews. Amazon.com is probably the easiest place to get one from, Guitar Centers is usually asking a bit more for it. (they might price match)

For interviews you will probably only get seasick from stereo. That can be handled in post production though.
If you want supertough with really good sound, nothing beats the Sennheiser MD21. A classic, still made the same way as when it was introduced in 1954. You should be able to find a used one on ebay for around $150 and it will last your lifetime as well as you childrens and you grandchildrens. You would have to make a special cable for the MD though.
