Title: Bogen 3372 or 3373?
Post by: Trevor A on March 19, 2006, 12:52:30 PM
I'm looking to get a stand to use  FOB in general admission
type settings. From what I read the Bogen 3373 seems to be
the stand of choice. What about the 3372 that goes up over 7
ft? Is this too high and more likely to result in being
asked to take it down?

I want to use it for bands that allow open taping, but don't
have a tapers section or where the tapers section sucks. I
would like to also try using it ahhem with bands that don't
openly allow taping too, if I can get away with it. :)

I'm new to stand taping, so any help is appreciated.

trevor, i think you are going to want a higher reach. my stand goes 10' and my friend's goes 17. you want to be able to be above the crowd noise and in some venues the floor isn't always level all the way to the stage.

How about a 3373 for FOB only work, and a good clamp for when you are back in the section. I've stopped bringing my big stand to shows when I know I'll be in the section- everything always seems to work better when a bunch of us team up around a single stand anyway.

I have the 3373 for fob and a telephone pole (goes up to 17') for other situations.  I would love to have one stand that fits all scenarios, but no stand that I have found breaks down to as small as the 3373 does and would still be functional for other situations, so I have two.

The clamp suggestion is a good one as well, but could cause you issue if you decide to clamp at an abb or band with similar policy show where you tape from your seat, unless you get lucky and you have tapers around you.

My ideal stand folds up to 19" (like the 3373) but offers 8' of reach (a la the 3372).  No stand I know of meets both these requirements.  So I carry a 3373 and a 20" Bogen heavy duty flexarm extension (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=74314&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) (gooseneck).  I rarely use the gooseneck, but when I do it gets me up to ~8'.  So I run either:

3373 + 5/8 stud to 3/8" male thread adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5357&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) + 3/8" female thread to 5/8" male thread adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=284333&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) + mic mount

OR

3373 + 5/8 stud to 3/8" male thread adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5357&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) + 20" Bogen heavy duty flexarm extension (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=74314&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) + 1/4" female thread to 3/8" male thread adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=101501&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) + 3/8" female thread to 5/8" male thread adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=284333&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) + mic mount

I also use the flexarm extension and/or adapters with my SuperClamp.

Oh, and clamps - gotta have clamps!  One for railings (Bogen SuperClamp (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5151&is=REG&addedTroughType=search)), one for stands (Windtech "C" Type (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=298908&is=REG&addedTroughType=search)).  I rarely run a stand anymore - almost always clamp to other stands or some other fixture in the venue.

I think this would be perfect. Thanks for the links! I found
all the different stands and accessories very confusing,
especially with all the adapters, so it is much appreciated.
I just placed my order for all the items you listed, and
added the 7' extension pole for good measure. :)

There isn't a big taping community here in
Montreal...Probably because not many jam bands come through.
I've only seen a stand at shows a couple times( Blues
Traveler and Wide Spread Panick), and never an actual taping
section, so I'm most likely going to be the only one. I'd
also like to use a stand on the sly if I get up the courage,
so that is also why I want a low profile set up. :)

I'm going to Europe to see some Tragically Hip shows
this summer. They do allow taping, but they don't have a
taping section, and defer to the venue for what type of
taping is allowed. So, having something low profile will be
good for taking on the road and may result in less hassles
from venues. :)

Now I just need to get a mic bar and I should be set. :)

3373 and cut the legs down so the fold up flush under the base.  makes for a smaller footprint when it's crowded.  clamp for those times when you are stuck at the back and want to go up high.

Found this and thought it was a great post, +T.
