Title: Who is running a pre-amp in front of a 722/744?
Post by: balou2 on March 20, 2006, 06:22:07 PM
Curious what the opinions are out there.  I've read the feedback and other threads, but looking for a specific conversation regarding your 722/44 sounds.  I have not heard enough recordings to notice a strong difference in mics>722/44 and mics/pre/722.

I run either a m148 or m248 in front of mine.

It seems like almost every source I've seen with 722/744 in the lineage has a pre in front of it, except for Z-Man who seems to be running no external pre. It seems like I see an abnormal amount of people using v3's in front of them for some reason, but it may actually be a normal amount and the misperception may just be a manifestation of my subconscious desire to own a v3.

I dont run a pre and see no need for it.  I actually find the 722 pre to be very pleasing to listen to.  I recently ran a M148 in the lineage (4022->722) and the results were not as crisp as I get from the 722 alone.  Going to run some more experiments to see if that was room dynamics, but that is my current view...

I prefer the V2/V3's pre over the 722/744's. That's just me, though. It's not a dramatic difference, but I can hear it.

So far I have been running my V3 digital in front of my 722. I have done this because I love the v3 pre and prefer the level controls on the V3. I hope to run straight into the 722 soon. I want to do so at a show that does not really matter to me.

A friend of mine runs the V2 in front. He likes it better then the V3.

I wish I could afford a 744  :'(

I run pres in front...not "fast" enough for me as is..I like the mytek converter better too....of course those are nitpicks and it does sound great alone..just not the sound for me.

V2 > 722

have also run psp2 > 722

both sound great and better than the internal pres.  with that said...the internal pres are still very good.

I normally run straight >>>722 with schoeps. Used to run MBHO's w/ it.

I have some recent comps done @ langerado - will be posting my UMph latenight 3/11/06 FOB/DFC from Revolution in ft. lauderdale.

Ran MK6>kc5>cmc6>V2 (SET 1 ONLY)>722

so youll be able to see the differences. Sounds great, show was outdoors, and we were in the sweet spot.

I run a V3 in front, mostly so I can run a backup source and for patchers. I just started running the 722 mics in and I'm very pleased with the results, but I lost my 16 bit backup capability and now wondering what to do with patchers. See http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=61817.0
