Title: PreAmp Options/Recommendations
Post by: kingofpoland on March 22, 2006, 02:36:28 PM
So here's another newbie trying to get the ball rolling.  I picked up a Microtrack 24/96 the other day thus starting the beginning of my rig.  Now for the preamp, and I need some help.   The Edirol UA-5 was the one recommended but as we all know they are not being produced and then still have to be modded.  I am trying to avoid all this and just buy a new PA that will be compatible with my recorder.  Any suggestions?

I am looking at the m-audio Firewire 410 preamp and have been back and forth with their support team trying to figure out if it will work in the field while NOT plugged into the firewire port.  It says it can be "powered via DC supply or FireWire bus*".   If I can have it working in the field while either plugged into the wall or on a portable battery and NOT have the firewire connected then I think it will be good for me.

Help please.  Suggestions, recommendations, etc.

Thanks

That's the thing.  I have a small budget.  I'd like to get something between $250 and $500.   That should be able to get me something decent.  thanks

I should have asked what mics you have. But here's some used pre's/ad's in your range.

around 250.00 & under
Digimod UA-5
AD-20
GP DMIC-20
mv-100

over 250 to 500
SD MP2
Oade mod Ua-5 (warm, T ect.)
line transformers and a modsbm1 (one in the YS for 325)

thanks kindguy

The only problem is that I cannot find a digimod UA-5 anywhere.  THat would work fine if I could find one.   I also have had problems in the past and would like to buy a new preamp that would come with a warranty.  I'm not totally opposed to finding an used one but I'd rather have something new, even if it means spending a few extra bucks.

As for the mics, I have none, they will be purchased after I find a preamp.

**Chanher - thanks for the input, I was afraid of that.  I guess it's time to find something else

you should be able to find something in your price range.

i believe if you purchase an Oade moded UA-5 it maintains it's warranty, you would have to check with Chris to the extent but he backs up his modded ua-5's as well

I might suggest a couple of items.  Maybe look at the presonus firebox?  Or the PS-2 & AD-20 combo from Denecke:

http://www.denecke.com/prod04.htm

FWIW, the firebox cannot be used as stand alone unit with a feed to the spdif outputs.  It defaults to the analog out when powered up without the firewire plugged in.
