Title: Sony 75ES Caution Light?
Post by: som on March 25, 2006, 01:00:02 PM
I recently purchased a used Sony 75ES DAT deck. It worked fine for a couple of months (pretty low usage). Last night I tried to play a recent recording and it won't play at all. It seems to load the tape fine, but then the little "caution" light comes on and it won't play or rewind or anything. I've tried a couple different tapes all with the same result. I even tried a head cleaning tape, same thing.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I don't have any direct experience with this problem, but I just checked my 75ES owners manual, and see the following listed under the symptom of "The Caution indicator lights, and no button does function":
Cause: 1) Moisture condenses inside the unit - or - 2) Defective or damaged cassette is inserted.
Remedy: 1) Leave the unit as is, then turn on the power (see page 5). - or - 2) Remove the cassette.

Since you have tried a couple of different tapes, I doubt that it is "#2".

From page 5 of the owners manual:
"When the CAUTION indicator lights and the unit will not operate: Leave the unit turned on for about an hour".

Hope this helps, and sorry if you had the manual and have tried this already.

If leaving on for an hour doesn't work, you will probably have to call Prodigital to get some more help.

Tom.

Thanks for the reply....I bought it used without a manual, so this definitely helps. I'll leave it on all night tonight and see if the light goes out.

I've left it on for a couple of days and it still won't work.

Anyone know anything about this?

Sorry to hear that. I would definately call Prodigital to see if they can help you out. Seems like the best next step.

From my experience with the Sony home decks the caution light is caused by the dew sensor or a bad rotary encoder.  Odds are it the later of the two which would require replacement.

This is very similar to the DTC-700 I used to have.

It should play or rewind tapes. I would take the top cover off and watch it loading and unloading tapes. If the tapes misload it could be that the tape guides are worn or have come loose. If so, it's time for ProDigital to look at it.
