Now that I have an R4, it's a little easier to slap it in it's bag, and do impromptu interviews with it -- a bit overkill for this purpose, but way easier to manage in its own bag than some sort of UA5/JB3 combo. Anyway, I've had some recent opportunities to talk with artists and performers after soundcheck and before gig time, and I thought it might be cool to get some interviews when/if they were cool with that. I'm looking for a decent, but not expensive, handheld mic to get this type of man-on-the-street interview thing on tape. Any suggestions?
Search for a used Sennheiser MD21. You should be able to get it around $200. (New they sell for a lot more). The design stems from 1954 and is still made. It makes a very good interview mic in my experience. I run mine with a SD 722.

Sorry to say I'm looking for something less expensive. And trust me, I know the tradeoffs, but I want something pretty cheap, although I'll keep that recommendation in mind, so thanks!
why dont you just use one of your akg or sp's? you have cards, omnis and hypers at your disposal...
of course you could have used the AT943
Nah, I want something I can also use with my video cam, and something that doesn't have much handling noise. I could always use a shockount, but then I'm almost in boompole land -- where I would in fact use my 393 indoors or my shotgun outdoors... But, I'm thinking that I just want a cheesy handheld mic that I don't even care about (if it gets thrashed in my bag, or I lose it, whatever).
doesn't the r4 have an internal mic -
just jam the thing in the interviewees face >:D ;D :P
