Leave it to mastering engineers that know what they are doing is the best tip I can offer.

for a good book on mastering, Check out Mastering Audio (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0240805453/002-3378238-0500069?v=glance&n=283155)  <<this Book was written by Bob Katz.

and an outstanding webboard devoted to mastering(where many of the real professionals hang out) is

 or Bob Katz site---www.digido.com

Agreed, IF you are wanting a commercial release master.  Nothing wrong with experimenting and learning how to master though.  Eventually all the "pros" will die.  If no one else ever learns how to master, our future is a world filled with unmastered CDs... :o

Anyway, Bob Katz is an invaluable resource for understanding mastering in general.  Above all, you need good ears and a good monitoring system.  If you have that, a lot of the mastering process will probably come naturally to you.

Good luck,
Dirk

My best advice would be to learn what effect boosting and cutting different frequencies does to your mix.
Invest in some quality speaker monitors or a nice pair of headphones and listen to music on them WHENEVER YOU CAN.
It's important to learn what commercial CDs sound like on your monitors so it gives you something to shoot for.
Listen to all types of music.
When listening to music or at a live show, try to pick out what you think doesn't sound right and imagine in your head how you would go about fixing it if you were running the board or mastering the mix.
