i have this 300 gig maxtor shared storage hd a friend sold me. however i am not sure how to use it. do i need to connect it to a hub? can i plug it directly into my laptop? helpless

just hook up with usb 2 or firewire

did that says there is not a router and cannot hookup

It's a network storage device from the sound of it...
You should be able to just plug it into your router and it will assign an IP to it. Other than that I have no idea as I haven't messed with one, but the owners manual on the manufacturers website will do wonders. :P You will have to setup your network to account for it, and it should be relatively straight forward. Its not a 'portable' device per say.
