Title: Help! Ua5 taking a patch from soundboard is too hot.
Post by: Nomad on April 08, 2006, 08:10:56 PM
I running Ua5>JB3 and even with the channels turned all the way down its too hot. What if instead of Optical to JB3 I ran Line in and turned the gain down would that help? If not what can I do in the future to fix this. I have ran board before but this seems to be a very hot board. I only have an hour or I wouldnt have posted this on the open forum. Thanks!

maybe the feed from the board is too hot.  can you ask sound guy to lower it a bit?

Depending on the board, you have to use attenuators or stepdown/DI boxes.  If the board outputs a pro level signal, you'll have to step it down manually...no amount of "turning down" will do it.  Ask the club if they have any DIs

if youre pre is overloading, going analog into the jb3 would not help, just get some -20db attenuators and be done w/ it :)

heres the cheapest ones i could find when i got the -30db ones

Wait a second. I just saw the input volume control. If I do rca from the board to the rca input on the Ua5 can I just use the input volume to cool off the signal. I sure hope so.

One last newbie question. Do I need to be running Lo-z or Hi-z from the board.

If you are patching RCAs out of the SBD and into your UA-5, then the input volume knob on the rear of the UA-5 is your friend. You may definately use it to lower the db level. When I get a board feed, that's what I use to control levels.

I was told to run Lo-Z every time, no matter board feed or mic feed, if I'm wrong someone else please advise. I wouldn't want to tell him the wrong way to do it.

I think we were all assuming that THAT WAS THE GAIN YOU TURNED DOWN. Sounds like you were using the nobs in the front of the UA5? You need to lower the input in the back. If you are STILL too hot, then use attenuators.

Lo-z, always.  You still may overload.  Get some attenuators.

What a relief! I have learned a lot in this situation and have plenty of adapters now that will one day come in handy. Thanks guys. I will be running the board and another guy will be running 480's>V2>D10  and he is  making a matrix mix for a CD. Thanks for the help and wish us luck.

Yeah I was dong XLR first. So the input volume will help if I do XLR in as well. If so ill go that way instead or rca since I have better xlr interconnects.
