Title: need help putting together a stealth rig
Post by: jewgrass on September 02, 2003, 03:05:08 PM
I'm thinking about getting either the CSB's or CSC's.  I'd be running them straight into the jb3 mic-in, unless I can find a small cheap pre.  I need help with the mounting options. I first thought about putting the omnis in my ear, but now I'm thinking the cards would be better mounted in hat or something.  Anyone got any pics or mounting suggestions?

I'd like to keep it in the $300 range, so the Core Sounds seem like the way to go.

Thanks all!

You might also try the AT831s or AT853s from Sound Professionals.  Both cards, although the 853s give you the option of hypers or omnis.

I like the ATs better than the CS, personally.  For $300, you may be able to get into some stock AT mics instead of the SP variants.

As for mounting, I used to use a homemade croakie mount.  Worked alright.  But I like the sound of stereo configs much better.

So now I use a Kangol Tropic Vent Air (or something like that) cap.  The mics slide into the "bill" of the cap.  I've recently put together a ghetto mount for the hat - effectively coat hanger wire bent to follow the arc of the bill, and then two supports to which I attach the caps with elastic bands.  This allows a stealthy stereo config which will produce much better imaging than just pointing the caps at the soundstage a la croakie mount.

Here's the hat I use - the Kangol Tropic Vent Air:

And if you can deal with my fugly ASCII art, here's what I ghetto'd together, top view:
FRONT OF HAT

   /------\
  / /----\ \
 / / wire \ \  <----------  bill of hat
 \1    2/

(E)      (E)

 \__________/

BACK OF HAT

E = ears
1 = mic, pointing left (variable angle by bending the wire a bit)
2 = mic, pointing right (ditto)

The interior upside-down U thingy inside the bill of the hat (labled "wire" above) is the wire
mount I put together.  I'll try to remember to take some pics sometime this week.

Thanks guys, this sounds like the way to go.  Hows that Sound Pro battery box/mic pre? I was thinking of getting that as well, that'll put me around $400 plus the hat.

Brian, if you could take some pics that'd be sweet! +T to ya!

I'm using AT831s > Batter Box w/roll-off @95htz > MD

i have no complaints :)

Armen, I can't even see the damn DPAs, so the question goes to Schwilly --

Do you leave the mics enclosed by the croakies while recording, or do you slide the croakies back / mics forward to free up the capsule so it's not buried under the croakie?

I always ran mine with the caps pointing out the front so they weren't covered by the croakie material, just wondering how you guys do it.

My DPAs are exposed indoors, left in the croakie outdoors. The sonic difference due to croakie material is surprisingly small, although I haven't done any outright comparisons.
Schwilly leaves his in... Schwill?
