Looks like this might be a nice solution when coupled phantom power.

if only it had some kind of level monitoring like LEDs other then the clip indicator.

I opened mine up to add some diffusing/shading material to the LEDs (they are bright!) and found black goop covering almost the entire PCB - looked intentional - maybe they are trying to keep the components secret?  I can post a pic if there's interest.

For a cheap open-taping solution I think this plus a Church Audio preamp will get the job done, but it's not the most user-friendly package out there.  I really wish it had a hold switch of some sort.
