Title: Good wind screens for km184s?
Post by: Elana on April 29, 2006, 10:34:44 PM
So I found out today (what I suspected...) that the stock wind screens on the KM184's won't suffice in moderately windy conditions.  Any suggestions for better ones?

The Shure's worked even in hurricane warning conditions... while (like you found out) the stock Neumann's stay back in their box.

i use the DPA UA0896 and love them.  the shure's that were mentioned above are great too - if not better, but i havent experienced conditions yet (ie red rocks) that warrant the shures.

if really windy, throw a dead rat over the windscreen... that should be just about as good as the shure with out having to buy another windscreen.

How large are the DPA's compared to the Shures?

My Shures work great. I tape at Red Rocks all the time and they've withstood anything RR can throw at them.

I think it was at Panic last year and I had to use 2 hands to keep my stand from blowing away. No issues on the recording at all.

i am not sure of exact dimensions, but the DPAs are smaller, more oval, and not as dense.
i know nothing.

Ok, I'm kinda looking for smaller... less to carry around.  So the DPA's should do well in most normal windy conditions (i.e not freak storm winds or hurricanes), and the Shures will stand up to pretty much anything?

FWIW, I've had problems in even mild to moderate wind with the DPA UA0896.  I pretty much only use them indoors these days and stick with the Shure A81WS outdoors.  I know, it doesn't help that my experience is different from other UA0896 users.  YMMV.

That paints a GREAT picture!

Anybody have pix of the Shures on their mics?  So I can get a relative idea of size?

ditto.  at smilefest last year during jorma's set I got way more wind noise than I should have with the dpa's.  I never even felt like it was windy at all.  just a nice day outside.
