So, I know that the V3 has internal jumpers that allow for internal attenuation of -20db.
Jumpers J3,J4 = channel 1
Jumpers J14,J15 = channel 2
Does anyone run the unit with the attenuation permanently set? I don't carry attenuators with me, which has caused issues in the past when running a board mix > pre-amp. I would wager that I do about 1/2 my recording via a board, and half via mics. I just don't want to have to crack this thing every time I run a board mix.
Thoughts?

Maybe call Grace and see if they will make a mod switch on the front panel for you ala the M/S mod switch?

That's a good idea! I suppose it would be pretty simple with a pass-through...+t!!!

No dice on the mod...
We do not offer a custom pad switch. By using the internal jumpers, the
balanced signal path is kept as tight as possible. Running wires to a
switch would compromise the common-mode rejection.
The V3 will take a +15dBu signal before clipping (when set to minimum
gain and pad disengaged). This is plenty of headroom for most line
level applications. Engaging the pad will give you a +35dBu maximum
input level.
Makes a lot of sense. So...back to my original question...is it necessary to run it in -20db mode?

Bummer, but makes sense. Is attentuating from the board an option? Otherwise I think you would be better off with a set of external attentuators for sanitys sake. I've never heard anyone switching the jumpers and running the -20db pad FWIW.

i printed the part of the schematic of the v3
highlighted the jumpers for the M/S and attenuation
taped it to the v3
carried a small screwdriver and flashlight

Hi Mike,
I would adjust the output at the board. It won't take but one or two adjustments to get the board's output to a level that can be properly controlled by the V3. You've got board access. That would be the best way. Grace recommends avoiding attenuation in the V2 owner's manual. There position on attenuation has probably not changed with regards to the V3.

Are you bypassing the pre amp when using the V3's a/d converter for the board feed?

Jesus, why didn't I see that coming. The 722 is the same way. Thanks for the clarification.

Yeh...what Brian linked to.
Actually, I think I've just been looking at this wrong. The V3 outputs a pro signal, so the heat from a board, with the 15db overhead on the V3 should be o.k. when going digi out of the V3 (either AES or S/PDIF). I don't think I'll actually need to attenuate. I'm mostly thinking back to the multiple times when running my t+UA-5 from a board feed that I had to step down the signal with 40db boxes because I was clipping with the gain all the way down on the box. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
