The standard batteries were nearly worthless anyway, not much battery life, so even if you could track down new ones I'm not sure you'd really want them.
I ended up slicing one open, ripping out the internal cells, and soldering wires onto the contacts of the old battery and then onto connectors to a new power source, a big external SLA that gave me 6+ hours. Just make sure you don't get the polarity reversed - this is VERY important or you will fry the recorder IIRC.

Rebuilding the internals prob. wouldn't be that hard and I also remeber seeing (over on the oade board) that a company was rebuilding the old battery packs for these. I just used sleds and the dc jack... :P
Did the D3 operate off a 4-D cell sled like the D7/D8? If so you can find the plans to build a 6V sled here - http://www.rockpark.com/d7/

I have a battery sled that I used with my D3. I think C cells. I don't know how many off the top of my head. PM me for details.

The TCD-D3 normally runs on 9 Volts but 12 from a Lead Acid Battery also worked fine with mine.
Recorded for 2+ Years with mine on 12 Volt Battery without any Issue whatsoever.
(Something like 30-35 Recordings done)
12 Volt Lead Acid (Gel) Batteries can be found in a lot of sizes, chargers are aswell easyly found.
