Sorry to pollute with such an admittedly stupid thread, but I remember a while ago I read about a digital camera type of thing which was absolutely awesome for making video recordings. As I recall it was made by a company who made nothing but these devices, and it was around $500 (I may be wrong though). I also recall that it had an extreamly large lcd(?) display on the back of the device, and was also advertised as being able to watch DVD's and TV shows on. if anyone has any ideas about what I'm talking about, please let me know! =)

there is defintely not any digital cameras that are "absolutely awesome" for making videos
for 500 you would be better off to buy a 200 digi cam and 300 video camera off ebay

fair enough, but semantics aside, any ideas?

get a good DV cam with still capabilities because youll be hard pressed getting good dv imagery for 300$
i just spent months researching the 500$ - 1000$ price range
there are 2 good ones in the 500$ price range for "what we do" and make "decent" stills:

I wouldn't let the "stills" functionality guide you in any way. The bottom line is that stills from a videocam SUCK. Period, end of story. Any crap digital camera will take a better still than a videocam's still. The excepting might be an HD cam, but even then I bet not, and especially not in low-light conditions like concerts. Buy it for the video. BTW, I can vouche for the GS series MiniDV cams, they are pretty nice at their price point.

I really like taking stills with my GS400 videocam. It's manual adjustments of focus, aperature, gain, zoom, white ballance make me feel like using an old analog photocamera, I love ths feeling. and I like the results!
