Title: The Sony PCM-D1 mic config
Post by: cleantone on May 15, 2006, 02:27:50 PM
I haven't chimed in on any PCM-D1 thread cause this thing is obviously retarded for our uses. I was read the new BSW on the toilet the other day and looking at the mic config. This is not true X-Y as far as I know. I was going to record Apollo Sunshine at a bar in Amherst that night. They bring their own PA for this place and it sounds horrible. They do play a bunch of fun tunes and it is a good time. So I go anyway. As I'm clamping to the ceiling I decided to try the cinfig as seen on the PCM-1D. I regret not changing it between sets. It was aweful. I had it exactly as these units do and in a decent spot to record the band. It is the only place to clamp at this venue, on a broken light fixure. Only 10-15 feet from the band and pretty centered. I can't get over how bad the imaging is. It is the strangest narrow field I have ever heard. What were they thinking?

You got it right there... A config like that is best suited for very short distance interview recording.

we had a guy mount that thing to the top of our little stage lip tree last night, took down a Royer Ribbon to run the PCM D1 because of the buzz/hum the lights were making - definately had me scracting my head...

Moke and I both have his contact info so I'm hoping one of us will be able to get a copy from him.
