Title: What's the farthest distance you can tape with 4061's?
Post by: George on May 19, 2006, 03:44:50 PM
Not sure if this is an idiotic quesiton or not, so I'll ask it anyway   ;D

I've been curious as to when I should decide not to use my 4061's in a stealthing situation.  Venues that typically hold 1000-2000 people are the kinds of places I would generally consider taking my dpa's with me.  So what's the farthest distance (in feet) you would recommend taping at venue's where it's standing only (general admin)?  I have a show coming up tonight, but don't want to mention the venue.  I think I may be about 50' feet from the stage.

How about cards (what's the ideal distance for them?)  I have a pair of soundpro at853's (terminated to mini xlr).

no real help other than to say this,  if x is the ideal distance from the source with omnis, then 1.7x is acceptable for cards and 2x is the range for hypers and 1.2x for subs (using AT's suggestions)

EDIT for CORRECTED values

nice, didn't know it worked out like.  I'll see what some others think.  I was seriously considering the cards because I got them down pat in terms of stealthing thanks to the perfectly sized mini cable that comes out of the bbox.  The dpa's may be more messy because its gonna be a hassle to get the dpa box and my iriver situated in an easy spot (i think I need to get another pocket sewed into my jacket...).

oh, and here is the link that i pulled the info from... again, these were values set for at853 mics... others may be different... but i think that they should be close enough for a general application.

I'd say go with the AT cards - feeling comfortable with the gear is 1/2 the battle of pulling a good tape.

50 feet even with a loud clean PA in the sweet spot would be right in the range I would consider going with the cards over the DPA omnis.

I have used My 406x from several hundred feet back from the stage many many times.

Here is a show I did a few years back from the back section of seats at my local shed.

As long as you're not backed up against a wall getting reflections, I'd go with the omnis every time.

depends how the crowd is gonna be as well - if you are in the back with a room full of chatters than i'd say go with something directional.

That pretty much answers my question: cards for me.  Thanks guys!

Is that to say you'll be near a wall, or you just don't wanna agree with me?  :)

rspencer,

I sat in the seating area at nokia theatre, second to last row with my cards clipped to my collar.  I missed a part of the show since we were running late, so I only taped about an hours worth of the show.  The sound was exceptional, very crisp and clean and tight bass, very surprised by how good the pa sounded and it shows in the recording, little crowd noise, it sounds like i was a lot closer than it appears.  The cards worked perfectly   ;D

Oh, I was taping the Go-Go's   :D

How was the show?  And while I love omni's, at the back it was probably better to go with the cards.

The show was great, they sounded excellent and the vocals were spot on.  I would definitely see them again.
