I have an older sony viao with windows 98 that I would like to use for webcasting. I have a wireless card that works fine with my router, or any wireless router. I prefer to use a hard line when webcasting so I bought a linksys 10/100 integrated cardbus pc card.
When I hook this directly to my cable modem it works fine, but when I hook this to my router (d-link) it won't connect. Is there a different kind of card that I need, or is this a windows 98 issue, or what?

matt ... your description is a little hard to understand.
you get connectivity if you plug the enet cable into the cable modem, but you don't get connectivity if you plug the same cable into the router? if that's the problem it's not an OS issue. If Win98 was the problem you'd probably not be able to install the card at all.
is the card assigned a static ip, or is it being assigned an ip from a dhcp source? if so, is the dhcp source the cable modem or the router? could the dhcp scope be maxed out (no available ip's left)?

goto a windows dos propmpt and type 'ipconfig' You should have an ip address of something like 192.168.x.x and and the default gateway should be the ip of your router. If thats not the case you need to make sure you are properly connected to your router and it is properly connected and configured.
Also, be careful. Many routers have an uplink port for connecting one router to another which means on most routers with this feature you can't plug the computer into the port right next to the one the cable modem is plugged into on the back of the router.

I didn't do anything but install the drivers. I'm not sure without looking what the IP settings are. With my newer HP lappy I can just plug the ethernet cable into the machine and it works fine from either the line strait out of the modem or from the router. With the card in my older viao, it will only work from the modem and not the router. I also have a wireless card for the viao and that works fine with the router.
I just moved this past week so I'm still living out of boxes. I will do my best to revisit this thread after I get things all set up again. It just seemed weird to me! I actually have another ethernet card that I thought had a dongle issue and I tossed it... I think it was the same thing however.
If anything I have now written seems to help fire away, otherwise I will just repost once I have my computer thing all situated.

*edit* I actually brought both computers to a show I was webcasting a couple months ago and had an ethernet cable dropped down from the office above that was connected to the house router. The same cable didn't work with my viao/card but did work fine with the HP in the built-in port. Not sure if that helps...

wait .. matt ... this is a wireless card on win98? win98 does not support auto connect like winxp does. you'd have to manually configure the card to connect to the wireless router. i ran into this last week with a friend and i didn't think of the win98 wireless connect thing until just now.

Nope ... wireless works just fine. I'm not sure I had to do anything special with that card. I d/l'd the driver from the website and it fired right up. It is only the ethernet card that gives me problems and only when I try to connect through a hard wire from my wireless router... which works fine with my newer hp lappy with built in ethernet. I bought the ethernet card used on ebay and I guess I was thinking maybe it was too old to work with the newer router, and there was a different card I needed to buy. I know almost nothing about these things (obviously) so I'm not sure I'm really even explaining it right. I hope to get everything set up again in a day or two. Then I can probably help you guys to help me.

You might need to setup your ppoe seetings in the router for it to work right
I remember when I ran a router off a cable modem. It only saw 1 computer, but changing a few settings cleared it up

Well,
I didn't unpack the card yet but I did pull out the lappy and use it wireless. I wouldn't connect wireless this time assumably because I went from TW cable modem to SBC DSL and DSL does something different with multiple connections... here again it is all over my hjead.
So I switched to "automatically detect proxy settings" in the internet options menue and it connected right up. I wonder if this will make the difference with the ethernet card also... I'll post my results once I find the card and try it.
