Title: Neumann KMR 81i (short shotgun) vs. KMR 82i (long shotgun)
Post by: balou2 on May 21, 2006, 01:05:19 AM
I'm looking at picking one of these up.  Anyone know what the sonic differences between them are?  What would the purpose of using one over the other be?

If you don't get any replies, send an email to Dave at micsupply.  He runs (or did) KMR81i.  I heard a show he did with them in a club and it sounded great.

I ran them once at the spectrum.  You gotta point them better than I did.

Thanks man. +t

I didn't think I'd get much as I've NEVER seen anyone run the Neumann guns.  They're pretty expensive (overpriced IMO) but I have an option to buy one used for a good price.  I just don't know what the difference is.  If there's no audio difference, I'd rather run the shorty.

Mike as with most guns I would assume that it provides more directionality.  As for other sonic characteristics I can't fill in the blanks.

I think that I have a copy of a Reeltime Travelers set that Dave (from Mic Supply) did with his if you want to check it out.

If you're using it for taping shows, the 81i will sound more natural than the 82i.  Don't ever roll it off at shows in *any* venue.  I use the 81i on a boompole and it sounds more natural than the 82i.  But I mostly have it because it's short and in low ceiling shots you can get away with above the talent booming.
