Neumanns rule, they would be a definite upgrade from the SP C4's

I love `184's they rock I also love KM84'S if you can find some they have a very nice warm sound Neumann to me has this warmth I can just hear it. I love the KM84. One of the best mics ever made. But the KM184 is very good too. both are great choices.

I agree with the rest of the folks here, go for it!
also, because, in my opinion, the neumanns need a clean pre-amp behind them, so that the low end won't sound "loose" or "sloppy"
you've already got the V3, which is a great combo with the km184's.  I ran km184 > V3 for about 2 years :)

I ran KM140>V3 and loved it, so KM184>V3 would basically be the same thing. Go for it!

Ya, I've thought of upgrading to 184s/140s also.  You planning on keeping the C4's?  Personally, I'd keep them just to be able to run Omnis.  Plus, you could run a 4 mic mix, if that is your type of thing.

184>V3 = great concert tapes.

IMO, this is one of the most solid rigs for recording PAs w/o over-spending beyond the point of deminishing returns.
Plus, I love that wet neumann sound, both new and old.

My new 184's should be here Friday..  I am also thinking about investng in the 744, so that could run a 4 mic rig..

Km184's > C4 (Omni) > V3 > 744T

from what I understand, the 184's will run off the pre in the 744, and the C4's will run through the V3.

can't wait for Panic at the Rocks!

You might also want to consider the R-4.  You can run 4 mics for about $2000 less.

r4 is an option, but saving up all my lunch money for a 744 would be worth it in the end.

curious what about the 744 , in your opinion, makes it worth $2000 more than the R4?

from what i was told, the built in pre of the 744 blows the r4 away..  but then again, I haven't tested them side by side.  And if they sound similar to me (or if I can't really tell the difference), I would go with the r4

** on the other hand, the 744 has such pretty lights **

Yes you can run like that.  You might want to play around a little running 184>V3 lineout>744 too.  Thats become my favorite combination but using 140s.

The preamp in the V3 is better than the pre in the 722 but I like the 722 ADC better.  ymmv

BTW, congrats on teh 184s.  I ran them for about 5 years and was very happy with the tapes I got.

I've not done a direct comp, but I've used both the R4 and 722.  The 7xx's pre and ADC are far better than the R4, IMO.  I will say I find the R4's pre and ADC (running mic-in for unamplified recording) far quieter (wrt self-noise) than I expected, which made me quite happy.  Regardless, IME, mic-in or line-in, the R4 definitely lacks the detail of the 7xx pre/ADC.  Whether that makes the 744 worth an extra $2k (especially considering it only has 2 pre channels) is obviously a very personal decision.
