Too generic to answer.  What gear, specifically - make, model for mics, battery box, preamp/adc/recorder - are you using?

No matter what the input if you put a battery box in front the box will power the mics.  In past experiences I've never used mic-in level.  With the gear I'd been using it seems to intorduce some noise.  Always feed my mics into the pre/battery box and then line in on my recorder (jb3/microtrack/and now iriver).

He taped eddy money 2 weekends ago.  I heard a clip pretty damn good for being on the lawn.
