Title: Superlux SMKH8K ?
Post by: run_run_run on June 13, 2006, 12:38:51 PM
I have been looking into these on ebay and have a few questions. Do they have the same guts as the Samson's C02s? Also do you think by the time I rounded up all caps,  I would spend more then the price of a used C4 kit?

The Superlux website has a new pair with all the caps for somewhere areound $220 which I think is right around what a set of C4's go for used.

FWIW, I bought a used pair of just the cards in the yard sale about a year and a half ago for $80 and have used them alot as a second set of mics.

My first mics were superlux mics and I think they are great. No idea about the CO2, but the body does like similar. One thing the superlux mics offer that the C4s don't is a hyper cap. You would therefore spend more to get all 3 superlux caps than the C4s with just the card and omni cap. Either way, you will want to immediately upgrade the tbar and windscreens.

The Superlux smkh8k and the Co2's are the same.  Both are incredible values, and great sound for the price.

I have the mics and LOVE them...but one thing to be aware of that disappointed me is that if you want all the caps, you MUST buy the whole set.  You can't buy one configuration and go back and buy the additional caps.  I've emailed several distributors and have been told the same thing, "They currently do not export the caps seperately".  I picked up the Cards and love them and was looking to pick up the Omnis and Hypers but no luck so far.

Another thing is I'm not sure if the $215 set comes with 2 mics and caps, or a single mic with the extra caps and you have to buy two.  Everything in the description sounds singular to me.

The CM-H8K/U/H/O is a set with one preamp but all three capsules, Cardioid, Hypercardioid, and Omni. Each set comes with a HM-32 full elastic shock mount, S-08 windscreen, and spare suspension elements for the shock mount, in a hard shell case for $214.99 plus shipping. UPS Ground shipping in the 48 states is $15.00 for one set and an extra $7.50 for each additional set on the same order.

You would think the description would say it comes with 2 preamps, 2 shock mounts & 2 wind screens.

So no one sells extra caps?

Occasionally you can find them but it's rare.  There was a guy I got a set from and then bought the hypers, Avant Audio or AAAudio on ebay, but his ebay store doesn't carry the SMKH8K sets anymore so it doesn't look good.  There was a distributor listed on the Team Suplerlux Thread taht could get them but that was a while ago.

That sucks, looks like I will go the C4 route.

Just ordered a pair of these (under $50 with shipping) and they're a million times better than the ones that come with the set.  They don't fit in the case perfectly, but will still fit in there.  I found the plastic ones to not be sturdy enough with prolonged use, they would tilt down no matter how much I tightened them.  When you tighten these, they aren't going anywhere.  Also, the arm of the mount is centered on tube which makes more sense.  I've heard reports of some people tightening their included superlux mounts so much that the plastic snaps so these seem like a pretty cheap and sturdy replacement option.

These come with 5/8" threads, so if you want to use the Superlux T-Bar with them, you'll have to take the adapters out of the plastic superlux ones...just use a butter knife to unscrew the threads in there.

as for the superlux mics, you have to order 2 of the sets with all 3 caps...still very competitve pricing w/ the C4's. They won't be matched pairs, but these mics are made on the assembly line, not by hand, so that issue is pretty moot.

the c4's look like there are a bit better as far as the specs go IMO - and they have been promising a hyper cap

c4's look tasty especially with the hyper cap available soon.  but don't discount the oktava mk012 too soon.  it's a very comparable mic to the c4 both in sound, versatility, and price.  good customer service as well.  also easy to mod!  do a search for dorsey mod oktava and give em a listen.  just food for thought...

aaaudio on ebay will let you buy a set with cards for $109. Then its $120 for each set of added caps.

Nice find! I love the superlux mounts, but not the construction. I may look into these.
