This may be a dunb question, but does such a cable exist?
If so, does anyone know where to buy one?
-
What are you trying to accomplish?
One could pass a S/PDIF signal through a coax cable with one end of the cable terminated in an 1/8" stereo mini cable, but it would only be useful if the device to which the mini connected had a, well...mini stereo S/PDIF input. I think some of the old DAT decks used a mini connector for S/PDIF signals.

I am curious if the output of a denecke ad-20 (coax) could terminate at an 1/8" mini to go line in in some of the new .WAV recorders that are available??? I know it works with my Sony M1 DAT, but i use a 7-pin with coax cable so it is different...but when i upgrade i want to know if the AD-20 will be obsolete to me since most of the WAV recorders have 1/8" mic in and line in inputs only.
I will probably be getting on e of the smaller WAV recorder units like a R-01, R09 or the MT.
Anyone have any ideas about this???

We're confusing some terms here. The Denecke AD-20 outputs a S/PDIF (digital) signal through a coax cable (and also optical, but that's not part of this discussion). Line-in, by definition, is an analog signal. To clarify: you should be able to send the AD-20s digital output (S/PDIF over coax cable) to any device that accepts a S/PDIF input via coax - using whatever connector is appropriate for the recorder, i.e. RCA, mini, XLR, proprietary 7-pin, etc. If the recorder does not accept S/PDIF inputs via coax, i.e. if it only supports analog inputs, then no - this is not possible.
The M1 supports this connection with its proprietary 7-pin cable. Is that how you've connected your AD-20 and M1 in the past, with a 7-pin cable on the bottom of the unit? (as opposed to the stereo mini line-in on the top of the unit)
-
Yeah...through an Oade 7-Pin.
I didn't think this was possible, I just wanted to make sure though.
So I gues the AD-20 will be obsolete when I upgrade right?
Do you know of any small portable WAV recorders that accept SPDIF coax or Optical?

M-Audio Microtrack 2496. Some of the higher-end MDs might, I don't know.

I thought that MT might have that.
Aren't people having a lot of issues with the firmeware on the MT though? I haven't heard a lot of good things about the MT as of yet. I heard the levels were very hard to accurately set too.
plus, i'm not too keen on the charging from the computer...i like to R-09 since you can use AAs. Nice and simple...too bad they didn't include a SPDIF in on the R-09.

The MT charges from the wall too. Like an iPod, it comes with a wall plug that accepts its USB cable. Also, I think that while you have heard a lot of info about the MT, most people actually have had a lot of success with it. I have used it for around 25 shows now, and I have retired my JB3 as a result. The latest firmware is stable, and you have seen the problem threads all but disappear.

yes, old casio portable dats(cant remeber the model) has a single 1/8 digi coax jack. my buddy had a hard time finding a cable, I gave him a cable that was intended for video, so it was yellow and had only one band on the 1/8 connector, it came with an old olympus digi camera, it worked! so try looking for a video related cable if you cant find what your looking for

I think the core sound card can take either optical or 1/8 inch digital if you wanted to record to a pda. I know core sound sells an 1/8>1/8 digital cable.

I think one of the iRiver's supports 16-bit optical input using Rockbox, but don't know for certain if it's available just yet or if they've worked the bugs out.

All MDs have an optical in...at least all the ones Ive seen. The new HIMDs are not restricted by any SCMS so you can make digital copies of digital copies.
