I am looking for a bag that would have room to fit a macbook ( 12.78 inches X 8.92 inches) and a UA 5 upright assuming it can go upright. Also there needs to have room for miscellaneous gear. Do most of you have 3 bags/cases, 1 for mics, 1 for the stand and 1 for the rest?

allot of people use the Nova 4 and Nova 5
I think from you dimensions the 4 would work. nice bag but a little pricey for me
I use a disc golf bag with some of the cloth dividers cut out, and i throw that in a backpack so I'll have everything including my camera stuff.
edit: cause i spelled nova norva the first time :P

I use a plano tackle bag that I got at wally world for something like $8. It's a small one but I can fit my UA5, Mics in a 1060, t-bar, shocks, and jb3 in a hard case in the main comaprtment. Cables go in one outside pocket and clamps, lights, misc crap in the other.

Without the macbook I have to put in my .02 for the Nova Pro AW bags. Weather resistant and have a bottom 'pouch' that can be brought out to cover the gear from the elements when needed. Plenty of velcro dividers to arrange things the way you want. The bottom pouch is also a great place to stick a flask or what ever else you might want to take in unnoticed.
Unfortunetly you just missed a deal to get a Nova4 shipped from amazon for $5 shipped. (see the retail section... the deal might come back... have not checked in a few days.)

What ever I get, it needs to be big enough so the laptop can be open inside it when taping.

yeah none of the bags listed so far would do well with a macbook imo, you would have to set the book on the top of the bag or something to seethe screen and bascially close it 90% to fit it back down into the bag
although without the book i recommend the nova5 too

I still don't understand people's thinking on pricey/cheap bags. The Nova 4 can be had from under $50 most places and the Nova 5 for like $60.
You have thousands of dollars worth of gear and you're going to keep it in a $15 bag? Does not make sense to me at all. Why skimp on the one thing that keeps your gear protected from all sorts of shit.
I use the LowePro Magnum now. Its big as hell but I keep my laptop (Dell 700m), V3, modSBM, mics, clamps and all my other gear in it. I previously was using the Nova 5 and as far as I am concerned it is the best bag out there. While the SonicCases and Portabraces are great as well the Nova series bags just freakin rock.
Ask yourself what happens when some drunk spills his beer near your gear or if rain comes. What is your gear worth to ya, ya know?

Fishing tackle bags are made to house some damn pricy gear, and they're waterproof for being on boats. Camera bags aren't intended for such rigors, by any stretch. Some fly reels, and deep sea reels, will rival the price of a quality set of mics, or easily surpass.

I hear ya Mike and I can see the rationale in the fishing bags. And I'm not saying that folks need to go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a bag I just always have had a hard time thinking that of all the avenues in this hooby to try and save a buck on that your bag would be the one.
After reading my post back I hope that the tone did not come across as me being an ass as it was/is not intended that way at all. Bags are like I have said just one aspect of the hobby that seems to generally get skimped on to my bewilderment.
But as the song goes:
The world don't move to the beat of just one drum.
What might be right for one may not be right for some

I use the lowe magnum as well had it this past weekend in the rain and it worked like a champ used the rain fly of sorts and water just beeded right off of it...its a beast of a bag but its nice being able to have everything you need in one bag and then a litle bit of room. I am more than sold on the magnum...its the cadillac of the gear bags in my eyes.

I didn't mean to come off as argumentative either.
My cheapo Rapala bag is holding up well, under fairly regular useage. When its time to replace, who knows what kind of contraption I come up with.
I like the camera bags, but am too cheap to get beyond bubbas tackle shop.
