I've read here on ts.com that blumlein works well for on-stage/stage-lip type of stuff, but I was wondering if anybody runs it at big outdoor sheds (i.e. deer creek, alpine valley, etc..) if so do you have any tips, pointers, thoughts, comments, or opinions on it.
should you only run it if you can be FOB relatively close to the stage (20-30 yards)? is it more susceptible to the typical issues associtaed with wind? are there any situations you would never want to run the configuration?
I was thinking of trying it out, but thought I'd see if anybody here has any thoughts or comments positve, negative, or neutral about it.

Just remember that blumlein will be REALLY spread if the mics dont "see" the entire ensemble. It is better at farther distances for that reason. That being said, if you are outdoors and the folks are noisy like Mr. French said, you might be better off with a baffled or near coincident pair.Blumlein works best in good acoustic enviroments... I like JDisc outside personally. I just did an outdoor concert two days ago.

should be great.
whats the expected audience like? If they are noisy, do you really want the rearward image?
good point. crowd noise could be a factor. logic tells me it shouldn't be worse than runnig split omnis, but maybe it is.
running split omni's with my TL's can result in monsterous bass. I read something you wrote in an old thread saying that blumlein had a natural bass roll off. So I'm envisioning an omni-esque sound with that 'natural bass roll off' which should sound amaing and it is what has me so excited about trying it out.

I'm running my j-disc for the first time tomorrow ;D. and I was thinking of running blumlein for the opening act just to try it out. I made a j-disc about a week after I got my TL's and the thing has just been sitting in the closet ever since. It's so big I've been afraid to drag it out to any shows. Running FOB with LD mics is usually pushing it anyway. Throw a big 10" disc in the mix and people might start bitching.

here's kind of a comp between near coincident and blumlein. we were all set up near each other.
I don't think I'd use blumein inside a "shed" type amphitheater. But I loved using it for those wide open field type venues (no structure over the audience).

awesome thanks for the samples and of Railroad Earth no less. I love those guys. +T
I'm listening to the vbr streams through headphones, but the blumlein sounds more "open and airy" to me. I'll have to dl the flacs when I get home and listen on a better system.

Do you have good windscreens for the TLs? Directional patterns are more susceptible to wind, and Blumlein, of course, has 360º of directional coverage. Something to consider.

That is very interesting. I may have to scrap the plans if the wind is strong.
I have a good set of windscreens and some dead rats. I'm using a clamp and a t-bar so that the bar is oriented vertically, and I don't think I can get the rats on and still fit the mics onto the t-bar in a blumlein config. everything barely fits the way it is.

you can cut the tops of a pair of windscreens so they will fit against each other with the mics in blumlein. you end up with the 2 windscreens making a "tube" over your mics. just keep them tight against each other and it works great.
