Title: Do I need a UA-5 and a ODL-276?
Post by: jasonw on June 21, 2006, 11:50:22 PM
I bought the hosa 276 before I bought the UA-5.  So do I need to keep around the hosa.

The Hosa ODL-276 takes a S/PDIF coax input and converts it to S/PDIF optical output, or vice versa.  A digi-modded UA5 outputs natively S/PDIF via both optical and coax.  If your recorder accepts S/PDIF input via either optical or coax, you don't need the ODL-276.  One reason to keep the Hosa ODL-276 is to provide patching capabilities to others while you record from the optical or coax S/PDIF.  But whether you provide that patch is up to you.

I kept mine to provide an optical patch. I remember how fired up I was when I could get a digital patch into my MiniDisc back in the day.   Thanks Ethan!

You will need the 276 to patch your JB3 into sombody else.  The UA5 wont convert digital formats (i.e coax to optical)

This is exactly why I've kept my 276.  The Hosa runs off the same 9v battery as the UA5, so I can use the same battery system - the WallyWart battery.

That being said, I've never patched...

I patched a million shows withthe jb3 via 1/8th to 1/8th and RCA>1/8th. It isnt a digital patch, but I dont agree with the stmt that you need the 276. Unless the only out available is a coax, then you need it. Dont get me wrong, it's great to have and I would definately keep it if I were you, but now that you have a ua-5 I dont think you really need to keep it, but I would.

You can run ua-5 > jb3 via optical and not use the hosa. Patching is the only reason you should need it (the hosa) now, either to patch your jb3 into someone else (It could happen!) or to allow another, unprepared jb3 patcher to use the coax output from your UA-5.

This is all assuming, of course, that you are using the UA-5 as a pre for your own mics or at least an a/d for an analog patch.

Also, speaking of chaining jb3's, if both jb3's have the newest firmware and you have a 4-pin > 4-pin Firewire cable you can simply xfer the show from one to the other after it's over.

edit: clarity (didn't work, i bet)
