Hey now. Tonight I am hosting a house concert at my place with Boulder Acoustic Society. (They won 2nd place at the Telluride band contest) You can see them and hear some tracks here....

The band consisits of....
Marimba, percussion
guitar/ukelele
bass/banjo
fiddle, mandolin
My question is this. I'll probably do the house show the way I do most of my house concerts. 1 set outside on the back porch and the 2nd inside in my living room. What config should I run this in? I would normally just run ORTF in front of the band but part of me wants to try either..
A] The J disc
B] Blumein
C] Or should I just stick with the cards at ORTF.
Should be a polite attentive crowd so chatters shouldn't be an issue. Opinions? Thanks for any input!

Since you've got multiple mics and an R4, I say go four-channel. Heh. I've been doing a lot of that lately and the recordings can rip. Considering you only have four instruments to deal with, you could actually mic each separately. But another approach would be to run two sets of stereo pairs. I'd get one pair in close, real close, on-stage if you will. I'd then put a second pair back and up high if possible. This will give you a load of options in post. You'll have that up-front sound from the main pair, but can mix in some of the room pair to bring in that live feeling of reverb and ambience into the mix. Also, it backs you up a little if one pair frys for some reason. Another approach would be to set up a stereo pair "like normal," and then reinforce where you might need more balance with a spot mic or two -- for example, if the marimba is behind everyone else, it might be cool to spot mic the marimba from underneath, then in post you can bring a little more marimba into play if you need too? Anyway, just some thoughts... Cause with that R4, I usually run fours mics in this type of situation EVEN IF I don't think I'll use the 3rd and 4th mics at all, hell, why not, you can always delete them, LOL!

Thanks man. A buddy is coming with his 480's and V3 so maybe I'll use them. I'll play around with the configs and see what comes of it.

So maybe the 414's blum up close and spot mic with the 480's? Kinda what I was leaning towards. When you run blum it's both figure 8's right? Or one figure 8 and 1 card? Which do you assign to the right and left?

both are fig-8, coincident. fig-8 and card is MS. set them up exactly as you would XY, with the same mic set for left and right.

Thanks man. +t I get those configs confused all the time. So does it matter which is facing side to side and which is pointing forward? Right now I've got the top mic pointing side to side snd the bottom facing foward with the top being right and the bottom being left. Sound about right? Did that make sense? lol

Outside - 1) J-Disc 2) Blumlein
Inside - 1) NOS (if you have subcards) 2) DIN or ORTF
Stage Lip on all of them (assuming no vocals)
Must be nice having the band play at your place +T

Hmm. Thanks for yet another opinion. Maybe blum outside and ORTF inside. ;) There is vocals but the show is unplugged 100%. Still curious on the forward/side VS. top/bottom thing regarding blum.

again, you are thinking of the MS setup. The card would be facing fwd and the fig8 left/right.
as for blumlein, set them up 90deg just like XY, except set the pattern to fig-8.

The config you describe above is for Mid-Side. Maybe some ASCI art will help... :)

The + represents a Mid-Side configuration, with the Mid mic pointing on-axis (0º) to the sound source, and the Side mic oriented mic 90º to the sound source.
The X represents a Blumlein or XY configuration, with the Left mic angled -45º relative to the sound source and the Right mic angled +45º to the sound source.

No real reason at all. I just have 2 sets to work with and have always done the ORTF thing. I don't want to have a set sounding ok or bad and one sounding sweet. Just nervous is all. Want to pull the sweetest recording is all. Keep the comments coming guys. Thanks Brian for the explanation on blum. I don't know why I thought one was forward and one was side. Doh!

I see you went for a little of my idea (at least a little piece of it)... I think it went something like "mic the Mariba's seperately cause they might be hidden in the back." ;)
