My housemate gave me an HP Pavillion that has bad sectors and a beat DVD drive. I'm considering dropping a new hard drive in it and replacing the DVD drive.
I don't want to tape with it, I was thinking of dumping this dreadful desktop I have and using this HP for internet browsing and such.
Any idea how many hassles I could run into changing out the DVD drive?

The best thing to do is to try and get the exact model number of the laptop and do a search on ebay for a replacement part. Take a look at the part if it slides in then it should be a matter of two screws and you have a new dvd drive. Just remember to remove the battery from the laptop before you touch anything to do with any drive. Most people unplug them but they forget about the battery and they start taking things apart thats where they run in to trouble. you can also call HP and ask to speak to a technician they can often walk you thru the whole thing over the phone.

the hp.com site will also tell you what the dvd drive model is and may offer replacement parts for that model laptop.
