Title: AD1K optical out issue
Post by: Candace on June 28, 2006, 10:46:55 PM
Hey all:

I was testing the optical out on my AD1K tonight to see if I could just plug it into a JB3 or iRiver if I decide to keep it. For some reason, neither the Fostex D5 or HHB CDR830 could lock onto the signal. There is a red light being transmitted from the AD1K to the recorders, but it's not recognizing it.

Does anyone have an idea of what could cause this?

check your cable  ???

also, there is an optical spdif out and an optical ADAT out (I am sure you know this but it is the only other thing I could think of)... :)

Cable is fine; and I turn the power switch to the left, not the right, so it is running the normal optical out. I wonder if there is some setting on the dip switches.

Candace:

Have you confirmed that these devices will lock onto a coax signal with all settings otherwise identical?

hmm...I always though one was TOSLINK SPDIF out and one was TOSLINK SPDIF in...

I thought the only ADAT outs were coax and AES...

Yep just checked the manual. The toslink is switchable between ADAT and SPDIF. One optical is output and one is input.

So Candace did you try both toslink's? From the manual it looks like if you're looking at the back that the input is the one on the left.

No, I only tried the output one. Are you saying I should try the input one and see if the AD1K locks on?

No I'm saying are you sure you tried to lock the JB3 with the ouput toslink?

Wasn't using a JB3. Was using a Fostex D-5 DAT and an HHB CDR830. The HHB said "digital unlock" and the Fostex just kept scrolling through sample rates. I wonder if it could be cause the AD1000 is the Platinum Edition, but I don't think that's it.

Ahh, that's it. Thanks for the clarification!

try both optical jacks.  i always plug into the wrong one and scratch my head when the recorder won't lock and says no signal....

If you are looking at the back of the unit, the opt jack on the right is an opt out, the one on the left is the opt in. My AD1K can lock onto an Optical signal in, but the optical out still doesn't seem to work, even though there is light coming out of the jack. I just don't get it at all.

Lots of units in the field had the optical crap out early, but were fine otherwise. I owned two with bad opticals but no other problems...for awhile :P
