Title: R-09:Annoying digital clicks
Post by: schoff on July 02, 2006, 07:56:20 AM
Was doing some field testing last night with my R-09. Was recording 24 bit with a sample rate of 48 KHZ.

Sounded great until this morning when adding fade out I noticed a series of digital clicks. Having heard the same interference on my clock radio I think the culprit is my mobile phone which was on and in close proximity the the recorder.

Can anyone confirm this is the problem and is there any way of removing the noise?

As for software to rectify the problem I have Soundprobe and Audacity.

Hoping this is in the right section,

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I got no helpful info for you...though it sounds like you have more than one issue: pops, beeps and what sounds like "arm-pit farting."

I've found that on rare occasions when I don't stick the optical all the way in the NJB3, I might get some pops...while I wouldn't circulate the show, for my own listening pleasure I might run it through SoundForge (7.0) in Vinyl Restoration. Usually that removes the pops or, at least, minimizes them so I can tolerate listening.

Thanks  Macroint for your reply.

The more I think about the problem I`m pretty sure it was a mobile phone related problem as there was an incoming call at the time of interference which, as I said before, was exactly the same sound as comes across on my radio alarm when the phone and radio are in the same proximity. So, I`m not unduly alarmed and don`t think it`s anything to do with the preamp as the rest of the recording was fine.

Will have to remember to turn Phone off in the future.

Cheers,

Schoff

Yup, that's cell phone interference alright (rfi).  Just be thankful you don't live in Australia (like me) where a cell phone within 20ft of your mics causes that. :(

See here: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=65932.0 to share my pain. :)

Cheers Whatboutbob.

Thanks for the input. Has anybody come up with a way of shielding recording equipment from this external interference?

For my own problem: dead easy: turn off the phone. However, if others have experienced/ come across cross interference from other people`s mobiles is there a way of protecting your equipment?

In anticipation

Not judging by that thread I posted above.  Am hoping Chris Church can come up with something for my mics.  I also suspect newer mics like the u853's that boast rfi-protection have built a grounded mini-faraday cage within the capsule. 'tis just a theory though.
