does anyone have experience and/or suggestions either way? I could get by with a thinner fur (1.25") by using the existing windscreen underneath... or could use thicker fur (maybe 2") and go directly over the mic itself. is there any greater sound loss/muffling with either method? or is it six-of-one, half-dozen of the other? thanks all.

use the foam screen to create an "open air" zone below the fur, and over the mic.
yup. I have had very good results with this approach.

Where can I buy dead rat windscreens? I have Sennheiser ME66 short gun mics.
