Title: AC voltage for US iRiver wallwart?
Post by: sunjan on July 10, 2006, 05:39:46 AM
Hi all,

I'm considering ordering a H1xx from the US (I live in Europe).
Are the US iRiver wallwarts fixed to 110V, or is there a 110/220V switch on them?

If they are fixed 110V, can anyone point me in the right direction where I can pick up a generic Euro power supply with the right voltage out?

Sorry if this might be a trivial question, but I haven't seen it covered in the FAQ.

EDIT: I just read in misticriver about the difference between "power supply" and charger. So just to put it right, iRiver uses a power supply, since the charger circuit is built-in.

It is a universal 5V AC adaptor, 100-240V 50-60Hz, the plug maybe different depending where the unit was originally destined to be sold.  No switch.

Thanks everybody for the fast answer. You're right about the plug, but adaptors can deal with that.

I wish all manufacturers would make power supplies with detachable power cords (like the Creative one, picture on Misticriver), it would make life a lot easier...

If whatboutbob reads this, maybe it can be added to the FAQ?

Yup, right on. If you want the proper technical desciption, it's NEMA 1-15. Read all about the different versions here:

sunjan, why don't you simply take one of those cables that charge the iriver and allow you to transfer files at the same time?...USB cable and charger in one...I have one and it works great!

+T fir the idea, gawain!
I was lucky this time, just picked up a Euro iRiver H120 on ebay for EUR 98, so it already comes with the right plug.

But those USB cables might be useful anyhow, now that there are car chargers that output to USB voltage too. Great for festival use...

you're welcome, Jan  :)

now you're done with the right plug, but I would consider take a cable anyway, I don't use my wall charger since I got the cable (same time to charge it, not more, as many people think! and no failures used as usb cable). Got mine from gomadic.com ('hitek guy' on Ebay) and it works great (I'm not affiliated to any of them). There are also other guys who sell them on ebay, can't remember the names.

and apart car chargers there are also 'battery packs' with Ni-Mh (or similar) or with AA batteries than give you extra power for 40 or 25 hours more (respectively), much better for festivals than the car thing  :)
