I have only had my iRiver HP120 for a few weeks, haven't even used it much, mainly for installing rockbox and testing to see how I like it. Today was recording some test files to answer some questions about nature recording for another tapersection member. Now the ON/Play button is not responding, it is like its stuck down and doesn't have the snap like its supposed to. I have only hit that button about 30 times since I got it. Can't even turn the unit on without sticking a pin in the reset hole. I would consider that a very poor quality piece of junk. I guess I can try to send it back for warranty, what a hassle. I don't think I would want to rely on this box to record a show EVER!
Anyone got any ideas? I read about some other people selling units with this same problem.

Dunno, I purchased mine new and its worked perfectly since then. Was yours new? I remember reading that some ts members had some issues with some of the latest batch of irivers.
-
i got mine refurb and its been perfect no problems at all. you probalbly just got a faulty one. i've recorded a ton of shows and not once have i had a problem, so its a very reliable unit and is not a peice of junk. i would send it back for a new one if its still on waranty.

I'm a recent purchaser and to date I'm happy with mine.
I even dropped mine from chest height straight to my tile floor without any problems, not even a scratch really. (and it was not in it's pleather case so it had no padding help.)
I say send it back for repair/replace
sorry to hear about that tho

Yea mine was new but it was from an ebay store outletmp3, and I just went an looked at their return policy and its only 14 days which sux since I am past that. Maybe I can try warranty to the factory but thats probably much more hassle. Anybody ever try factory warranty service?
-
i would still try and contact the place you got it from and see what they say.

I found their customer service to be excellent, although some of their refurbished iRivers are not. Send them an email and let them know what is going on and request that they send you an exchange unit.

Geeze there are a lot of issues with these “new” iriver units. Batteries and hdd’s seem to be the main culprits. AFAIK there haven’t been any h1x0’s manufactured in at least a couple of years. So my theory is that either someone’s lying when they’re being sold as “new” when they’re actually refurbs or they are “new” but have been sitting around for a few years.

My unit was also from outletmp3 and had more or less the same problems with the buttons and needed to reset many times...but it was not faulty! It was just a problem of the Rockbox version, I upgraded and it works like a champ now (I'm still using 12th of May version...let's hear how the new builds are working...)

i just upgraded to the newest build and its been very reliable. infact i just recorded about 7 1/2 hours(still going) tonight to test it out and its running very smoothly. infact this version has given me even more recording time than before i upgraded so its definetly worth the upgrade. i was using a very old build before though.

SunWizard: If you're having difficulty with warranty it may be worth opening the unit up and having a tinker. The button layout's pretty simple. You'll only need a T5 torx wrench to get the job done. PM me if you need any help.

nice to know, TideBleach, thank you! I'm gonna upgrade coming days if the latest builds are stable and giving a significant better recording time

Are you saying that 'sticking' buttons was due to Rockbox? Seems more like a 'mechanical' problem than a firmware related issue to me. Having to reset the unit, however, is a different story.
FWIW, I've used the 07.07.06 build for 2 shows line-in and 1 show digital-in and have had nothing but success. Also have done numerous 'test' recordings with that build without any problems.

Its not a rockbox problem, its the button no longer works, so it can't be turned on except by a reset. The button lost its snap.

yep, I had a problem almost everyday with sticking buttons and after upgrading to a new bulid problems suddenly dissapeared, I haven't touched the reset button since that. All the buttons were/are perfect mechanically, so I always have had clear it was Rockbox who caused it.
and thanks, cgrooves, nice to know that concrete buid works perfect, I will start upgrading with that then :)

somehow I find that hard to believe.
there was a fix recently because a long press on stop would not stop the action, and that's the closest I can come to explaining this (you holding the button too long).
Other than that, this is the first report on such an issue from a fairly large user base.

It was that way, petur, really! The problems were with the stop button and also with the play/pause one. And it happened pressing long or short, and with all kind of files (flac, wav, mp3), it just got stuck. And suddenly all started working when I upgraded to the 12.may build.
Maybe the unit just needed a 'warm-up' before start working properly, who knows...
Oh, and thanks for the great work with Rockbox!! :)

Easy way to tell is just to not boot into rockbox and see if the problem is still there.
