Title: Looking for pre recommendations...
Post by: macroint on July 19, 2006, 10:30:28 AM
I currently use the Denecke AD-20 and love it...but I'm having a problem with mine and am looking to get a replacement. I currently run Peluso>PS-2>AD-20>NJB3, but recently picked up the Edirol R-09. Not sure if the AD-20 is right for the R-09 (maybe it is, I don't know).

Any recommendations for a pre that is good for BOTH the NJB3 and R-09? I'd like to say that cost isn't an issue, but, unfortunately, it is...really prefer something less than $400, if possible.

You can probably find a used Sound Devices MP-2 for around $400.  Small, easy to use, and it sounds pretty good.  A bit on the hot end though.  It is my understanding that the R-09 A/D is pretty good, but I have not heard it myself to confirm this.  If you are really on a budget, you could probably just run Peluso > PS-2 > transformers > R-09.  The MP-2 is really the only pre I would recommend in this price range.  I have also heard good things about the modified UA-5, but that may be a bit outside your price range.

The AD-20 (or any pre/ADC combo) and R-09 aren't a good match because the R09 only accepts analog input.

I ran a BM2p+mod ua-5 with the Peluso's for 8 months.  Great combo IMO.  Tony( lifeduringwartime aka lowspark) also run this combo.  I've been seeing these pre's in the yardsale for under 400.  I sold mine for $375.  Add a wallworld battery and cable and your good for just over 400.  There is a w-mod for sale for $425 http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=67611.15 (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=67611.15)  I'm extemely happy with this combo as well.  Of course this will only work with your jb3 as the analog out goes a>d then d>a then your r-09 will go a>d again.  Depends I guess what you like more.  If you want to primarily run the r-09, I would definitely look at the mp-2.  The few sources I have heard with this pre behind the Peluso's really sounded nice.  Good luck!

doesnt the r-9 have an opti-in ??? if so, id stick w/ the AD-20, but if it only had analog-in, id go w/ an mp2 as well, maybe even an aerco mp-2 if you could find one used

if the r-9 has digi-in, what about a ua-5 ??? but like i said, if it only has analog in, an mp-2(SD) would be great, or what about the beyerdynamic mv-100? anyone heard peluso>mv-100 ???

or what about something diff and trying an RNP(really nice preamp) i recall bush running one awhile back and liking it, just another 400-ish option ;)

I say forget about the same old stuff and Chart new territory.. ;).

the FMR RNP...DC powered(9-12v DC), and gets great reviews on every forum I have seen it mentioned...loads of headroom, clean, highly portable. also serves as a DI box..

Nice...for some reason I thought the RNP was AC only.  And even though the RNP has 6dB-stepped gain, I'm guessing you could fine-tune on the R-09.  Or, for that matter, just run the levels low since it's 24-bit.

Yessir! I really hope someone will get one...it looks like a real contender....the more choices the better!

:D Naw man...For a portable , DC powered preamp, it looks like it might be a contender. From what ive heard(and granted, ive not done a side by side) it is at least as good as the Oade Stuff or the AD-20, etc... It aint a Chandler, but I think it might do well in a taping enviroment. A lot of guys love it on guitar based music, cabs, drums, etc... Worth a shot, id say..Hell, it might be the new ua-5!
